i can put too much pressure on myself, and let myself off the hook. the lute strings idea helps. just like tuning a stringed instrament, you dont want it too tight or too loose.

This is true, I think, of many people; may even be a universally shared human tendency. To follow your excellent metaphor, to learn to tune a stringed instrument by ear, takes true awareness, attention, dedication, and learning how to really listen(rather than just hear) to the current octave in order to adjust it. Thus, just like sounds, discipline is on a spectrum and takes learning how tight or loose to be while maintaining compassion and loving-kindness for one's self.
